Raphael Matos’ No. 2 car and Vitor Meira’s No. 14 car locked wheels in the 174th lap of this past weekend’s Indianapolis 500, causing Meria’s car to slide on its side along the racetrack wall. Lincoln Electric equipment – two Ranger® 305G engine-driven welders and two LN-25 (now LN-25 PRO) wire feeders – was used by the Indianapolis Motor Speedway crew to make fast, thorough repairs to the SAFER wall barrier, allowing the race to restart.

The special SAFER racing wall barrier systems are designed to minimize the impact of cars operating at race speed and protect the drivers. SAFER stands for Steel and Foam Energy Reduction. Fabrication crews remain on standby to handle wall repairs during qualifying and races. These repairs mainly consist of welding 3/16-inch mild steel tubing and plate. If damage occurs, the repairs must be done thoroughly, but quickly, to let the on-track action resume. For this reason, welder reliability is key.

Lincoln Electric is the “official welder” of the Indy Racing League and all of its teams.

The Lincoln Electric Company, headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, is the world leader in the design, development and manufacture of arc welding products, robotic arc welding systems, fume extraction equipment and plasma and oxyfuel cutting equipment. The company holds a leading global position in the brazing and soldering alloys market. For more information, visit www.lincolnelectric.com.
