Inventors, Makers and Hackers Push Limits of Innovation with Red Bull® . . . and Lincoln Electric

Red Bull Creation Competition Drives Offbeat, Grassroots Creators to Produce Inspired Design; Lincoln Electric Named Exclusive Welding Supplier for the Event

ClevelandSixteen teams of creative thinkers. The challenge to create an invention of the future. A city full of inspiration. Three days to bring it all to life. And Lincoln Electric, the exclusive supplier of welding equipment, consumables and safety apparel for Red Bull® Creation™, will help these out-of-the-box thinkers make it happen at the Red Bull Creation event, July 7-10, in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Red Bull Creation, a “competition about making things,” challenges “inventors, makers and hackers” to push their limits by creating something new and inspiring at a special laboratory in Brooklyn N.Y. The teams work under a tight deadline with very specific development constraints.
The team selection process was simple -- assemble a team of four, build an invention that “hacks the past to create the future,” with these caveats: incorporate an Arduino® microcontroller, film the whole process and submit it for judging. From those entries, judges nominated 10 of what Red Bull calls the “most creative, most palm-to-the-forehead-brilliant” teams to come to the Big Apple and compete in a final, “hacker showdown.”
For the final competition, Red Bull judges ultimately invited a field of 16 teams, including the 10 finalists plus six wild card teams, to work out of the Red Bull Creation laboratory site. This location has been converted into “the ultimate hackerspace.” The lab gives the teams a home base to design and fabricate their project, which will be based on a super-secret, themed project assignment, revealed in Brooklyn on July 7.
Upon arrival, the 16 teams will have 72 hours to imagine, design and build their creation, based on the assigned theme. They will be turned loose on the streets and alleys of New York to seek inspiration, as well as project components and supplies. Back at the lab, they’ll have access to a myriad of high-tech design and fabrication tools, including the following notable products from Lincoln Electric:
  • Power Wave® C300 Steel Ready-Pak®
  • Magnum® 250LX™ spool gun
  • POWER MIG® 140C
  • Tomahawk™ 375 Air plasma cutter
  • Invertec® V275-S
  • VIKING™ Street Rod™ and Patriot™ auto-darkening helmets
  • Red Line™ jackets, gloves, safety glasses, doo rags and welding caps
  • Lincoln Electric welding electrode and wire consumables.

“As the most innovative thinkers and designers in the welding products industry, we understand the importance of creatively thinking off the grid,” says Tim Birky, Lincoln Electric’s Manager of U.S. Marketing Communications. “That’s why we’re thrilled to be the exclusive supplier of welding equipment, consumables and safety apparel for Red Bull Creation to help these cutting edge innovators design for the future.”
At the end of this high-stakes innovation marathon, the public will have the opportunity to experience firsthand the mind-bending inventions designed for the competition. Inventions will be on display between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday, July 10, in Brooklyn’s McCarren Park. The winning team will receive cash and tools to support their next project.
Laisse Live Productions of Pacifica, California is producing the event in behalf of Red Bull North America, Inc, of Santa Monica, California. Red Bull functional drinks, first developed in Austria in 1984, are used by sports teams and individuals around the world to enhance performance, increase concentration and stimulate energy levels.
The Lincoln Electric Company, headquartered in Cleveland, Ohio, is the world leader in the design, development and manufacture of arc welding products, robotic arc welding systems, fume control systems, plasma and oxyfuel cutting equipment and has a leading global position in the brazing and soldering alloys market.
