Experts to share best practices, strategies and techniques for aluminum-welding applications
Cleveland – Thanks to such factors as its light weight and corrosion resistance, aluminum lends itself well to welding in many industries, but using it properly requires understanding its specific processes and techniques. Addressing aluminum’s unique properties is the subject of presentations by experts from Lincoln Electric and other industry practitioners at the 16th Aluminum Welding Conference, Sept. 4-5, in Chicago.
Two distinguished experts from Lincoln Electric will offer their insight at the conference.
Frank Armao, Director of Aluminum Welding Technology at Lincoln Electric, will lead three sessions to share his depth of knowledge about the aluminum-welding industry. First, he will discuss, “The Aluminum Designation System,” on Sept. 4 from 8:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., explaining AA's aluminum alloy and temper designation system, as well as the physical and mechanical properties of aluminum alloys.
That same day, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m., Armao will present, “Metal Preparation for Aluminum Welding,” sharing how welders can properly prepare their metals to ensure quality welded joints and avoid weld discontinuities.
On Sept. 5, Armao will give a talk entitled, “Gas Metal Arc Welding of Aluminum Alloys,” from 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. This session will provide details on metal-transfer modes, shielding-gas types, wire-feed systems and power-source selection – including constant voltage, constant current, pulse or variable polarity.
Elliott Ash, Welding Engineer/Product Manager – Aluminum Process Solutions at Lincoln Electric, will speak on “Aluminum Trends in Trailer Manufacturing,” on Sept. 5 from 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Aluminum is prevalent in the trailer-manufacturing industry due to its light weight, which helps improve fuel economy.
During the session, which is relevant for many attendees who use trailers on a daily basis, Ash will share the types of aluminum-intensive truck/trailers manufactured in North America, as well as appropriate aluminum applications, typical base materials used, common joint configurations, frequent challenges and solutions, industry best practices, filler-metal selection, and potential welding-process improvements.
