Recipients of the Thomas Medal are evaluated and selected by a panel based on their degree of personal involvement in IIW work, contributions to and promotion of international standardization in the field of welding, willingness and ability to lecture on global studies leading to the standardization of welding technology and leadership demonstrated through their work.

In addition to Fink’s involvement with IIW/ISO committees, he served as the U.S. delegate to IIW Commission XII for almost 10 years, currently serves as delegate to Commission II (Welding Consumables) and is a regular participant in WG Standardization. Fink also participates in the work of ISO Technical Committee 44 Subcommittee 3 on Filler Metals as the U.S. delegate. He is the appointed ISO observer to CEN TC121 SC3, which is responsible for the development of European standards or Euro Norms.

As a Lincoln Electric employee for nearly 40 years, Fink has spent his career in the areas of welding consumable design, as well as testing and standards. He concentrated on flux-cored and gas metal arc electrode design, welding procedure development and consumable product certifications.

Lincoln Electric is the world leader in the design, development and manufacture of arc welding products, robotic arc welding systems, weld fume control systems and plasma and oxyfuel cutting equipment and has a leading global position in the brazing and soldering alloys market.
